Washington cashes lottery ticket for Wall

Dividing the winners and losers on NBA draft night isn’t exactly a cumbersome chore for those who watched college basketball at all last season

And if you watched the University of Kentucky Wildcats play at least a couple of times, you know why the Washington Wizards were guaranteed to become the 2010 draft’s biggest winners on May 18, when the lottery ping pong balls were kind to them and they landed the No. Ed Hardy Shirts 1 overall pick

Thursday night they cashed that lottery ticket by selecting John Wall, who always dazzled and often dominated college hoops during his one and only season in Lexington as a point guard for Kentucky coach John Calipari

The 6-foot-7 Evan Turner of Ohio State was the No 2 selection (by Philadelphia) and will be one of the most versatile perimeter players to come into the NBA in a long while – a player worthy of the comparisons to Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers

And 6-8 1/2 Derrick Favors of Georgia Tech (who went third to New Jersey) has the kind of strength and explosiveness that reminds some veteran talent evaluators to that possessed by Amare Stoudemire when the Phoenix Suns surprised a few folks by picking him No 9 in the first round eight years ago

But . (Boxes). there isn’t a player among the 60 drafted Thursday night who has anywhere near Wall’s potential to immediately impact the NBA and – much sooner than later – become an all-star

The second biggest winner wasn’t an NBA team Thursday night – it was Calipari and the Kentucky program

Wall, DeMarcus Cousins (No. ed hardy shirts 5 to Sacramento), Patrick Patterson (No 14 to Houston), Eric Bledsoe (No 18 to Oklahoma City; his rights were traded to the Clippers) and Daniel Orton (No 29 to Orlando) were all selected in the first round – the first time five players from the same program were selected in the first round of the same draft

One could suggest that with all that NBA talent in the lineup, the Wildcats were underachievers of sorts by getting bounced out of the NCAA Tournament in a regional final by West Virginia. (Franck Muller).

But Thursday night’s results will only serve to help fuel a Wildcat recruiting machine that is rolling over all of its competition under Calipari

Do you think there is a player Kentucky is recruiting – be it high school freshman, sophomore or junior – who wasn’t watching the draft unfold Thursday night?

A year ago the Clippers landed by far the top prize in the draft in forward Blake Griffin of Oklahoma but needed the No 1 overall selection to do so

They were picking eighth Thursday night but by way of trade to Oklahoma City involving a future first-round selection, hit a draft jackpot twice in the first round

With that No. (Ebel). 8 pick, they were able to get the player who was atop their wish list for the better part of this month – Wake Forest sophomore forward Al-Farouq Aminu

Even if he isn’t quite ready to start immediately at the small forward position, he’ll get extensive minutes at the position and can be a serviceable backup to Griffin at the other forward slot

But the coup was in general manager Neil Olshey and president Andy Roeser engineering a deal that gave the Clippers the rights to Eric Bledsoe for that future pick. stainless steel jewelry wholesale

Had Bledsoe stuck around for a sophomore season at Kentucky, he could have been rated the No 1 point guard prospect in the 2011 draft

It’s been said before but this should be the draft that keeps the Clippers out of the lottery range of future drafts
